Abstract
The large power reactors now operating or under construction are based on ideas and licensing requirements of the sixties and seventies. New designs with improved safety features, including passive safety systems, have been proposed in the last few years. Criteria for passive safety systems were developed by the IAEA. Possible criteria such as functional requirements, testing, single failure criterion, redundancy and diversity, the quantification of reliability, and human interactions are discussed on the basis of examples. In addition, licensing aspects are briefly discussed and future needs outlined
