Abstract
On June 19, 1987, the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) launched the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I). SSM/I is a passive microwave radiometer that will provide near real‐time data for operational use. A data processing and management system to produce sea ice data products for distribution to the research community is under development by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ocean Data System (NODS) and the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) for NASA Polar Oceans Program. The computer‐based Cryospheric Data Management System (CDMS) at NSIDC will extract polar SSM/I data and make them readily available in suitable formats for scientific use. Plans for processing, archiving, and distributing these data are described.
