Abstract

Recent research in the wireless network has shown that contending traffic and interference may degrade the performance of multimedia application. Performance degradation includes low-quality image, frame loss, and multiple rebuffering. The performance of multimedia application is directly affected by availability of the bandwidth. Estimation of available bandwidth has shown much interest in the real-time multimedia application that needs some QoS guarantees. Estimation of availability of the bandwidth is a part admission control to provide quality of service routing in wireless LANs. Accurate estimation of available bandwidth is essential for resource management. Bandwidth estimation can be categorized into three categories: active probing technique, passive technique, and model-based technique. This paper provides a detail survey of “passive bandwidth estimation techniques” presented and a new bandwidth estimation technique (BWE-AODV) is implemented. The throughput of proposed and best-effort AODV is compared, and result shows that BWE-AODV performs better than AODV.
