Abstract

Parvoviruses cause common infectious diseases of dogs and cats. Challenging in individual patients, these diseases may be devastating in the shelter situation, due to the possibility of outbreaks occurring and the impact on shelter function. This article reviews the pathogenesis, treatment, prevention and management of canine parvovirus infection and feline panleukopenia in dogs and cats, with emphasis on the challenges of these infections in the shelter environment. Vaccination protocols are discussed with particular reference to shelters and other potentially high-challenge environments, and recommendations are provided for adaptations of traditional vaccination schedules according to patient risk.
