Abstract

Abstract Italy is distinctive, among the four largest European Union countries, in having a very low level of part-time work. Greece is the only EU country with a lower share of part-time jobs. This chapter explores the character¬ istics of the part-time workforce in Italy and how it compares with the much larger part-time workforces of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Any explanation for this low level of part-time working has to be informed by the generally lower level of women’s employment in Italy as compared with the three other large EU members. Whether low female work rates are seen as cause or consequence of low levels of part-time working, it is clear that the two are inextricably linked. This chapter there¬ fore explores women’s employment patterns before addressing part-time work.
