Abstract
Hosting web services (WSs) on mobile and wireless devices is challenging because of their resource limitations. The few existing works in this area are not suitable for hosting WS applications that involve large and complex business processes. Partitioning a WS application to offload a part of the application to a remote node can alleviate these problems. However, there is more than one way to offload parts of a WS application to remote nodes that lead to different partitioning frameworks. In this paper, we propose and analyse three application partitioning frameworks for mobile WSs and compare their performances. The effects of a number of workload and system parameters (such as the size of WS partitions and the size of data exchanged) are investigated. Insights gained into system behaviour and the relative performances of these partitioning frameworks are presented.
