Abstract
The traditional implementation of R-matrix theory to electronscattering and photoionization requires the computationallydemanding diagonalization of dense symmetric matrices ofHamiltonian elements. To make this task more efficient and toimprove the convergence of the R-matrix basis, we develop analternative R-matrix theory based on partitioning theeigenvectors and eigenvalues into a group of accurately knownlow-lying ones and derive an approximation to account for theremainder. We give the appropriate expressions for the R-matrix,its energy derivative, and the dipole matrix in this basis.Scattering from a diffuse hydrogen-like oxygen target withn⩽8 states is used to illustrate the convergence ofthe method.
