Abstract

In coastal and inland rivers with high-water pollution the transport, sedimentation and resuspension of fine sediments becomes important for the water quality and its management. Deposition and resuspension of polluted sediments are the most important sink and source terms in a contaminant budget. Maintenance dredging and flood erosion may cause remobilization of harzardous sediment-bound substances. Pollutant transport models are needed for short- and long-term prediction of water quality. This investigation concentrates on the hydromechanical aspects of the sedimentation, the particle exchange and mixing within the upper bed layer depending on flow, sediment and bed conditions.
