Abstract

A self-magnetically insulated, three-dimensionally focused ion-beam diode, spherical plasma focus diode (SPFD), is studied by numerical simulation using a two-dimensional, electromagnetic, relativistic particle-in-cell computer code. The calculated results of the diode impedance, the ion-current efficiency, and the focusing characteristics of the ion beam are presented. These results, except the data of the ion-beam current, are in good agreement with the experimental results. Since the major ion deflection direction observed experimentally is also obtained in the simulation, it is attempted to optimize the SPFD by correcting the ion deflection with the shape of the diode gap by means of simulations.
