Abstract

AbstractThe article describes the data and literature pertaining to the argument‐structural behaviour of verb–particle combinations in Germanic languages. This topic is of interest for theories of complex verb formation and of verbal and prepositional argument structure. While serving as an introductory text for readers unfamiliar with particle verbs, the article should also interest particle specialists because it highlights problems with existing theories and provides a broader taxonomy of the argument‐structural effects of particles and their interactions with other arguments than has hitherto been offered.
