Abstract

Bubble dynamics is a vital part of bubbling fluidized beds. Although, particles of different shape are encountered in the processes employing bubbling fluidized beds, it is often neglected. This thesis investigates the effect of particle shape on the bubble dynamics in bubbling fluidized beds by applying a numerical technique known CFD-DEM (Computational Fluid Dynamics – Discrete Element Modelling). Different shapes of particles are characterized by ellipsoids. The thesis demonstrates that the difference in particle shape can result in varying bubble dynamics and the computational method developed is beneficial to study bubbling fluidized beds.
