Abstract

The fraction of ions trapped by a laminar magnetosonic shock wave is evaluated theoretically. The heating rate due to the resonant ion acceleration is then obtained interms of the Mach number and upstream plasma parameters. In addition, it is shown that, in spite of the large positive potential in the shock region, a laminar shock can reflect some electrons, as well as ions, because of the magnetic mirror effect.
