Abstract
Mixing/Segregation of an iron-sand mixture was investigated in a 38 mm diameter moving fluidized bed. The mixture is fed into the middle of the bed and discharged from both the top and the bottom ends. The distribution of volumetric concentration of iron beads, measured by means of a specially designed sampler, was used to express the degree of segregation of the particle mixture in the bed. The segregation index N, defined as the ratio of characteristic areas, decreases with the increase in superficial gas velocity and solids flow rate, for a given solids density ratio and particle size ratio. When a magnetic field was employed, particle segregation was noted to increase with magnetic field strength.
