Abstract

The effect of the particle length and orientation distributions on the magnetization process in particulate recording media is investigated. And the distributions of particle length and orientation are estimated from a measured M− H loop. For the estimation, the magnetization of particles are assumed to reverse by the fanning mode in the chain-of-spheres model. For various Ω, which is the angle between the applied field and the direction of tape/disk motion, the good agreement is shown between the measured M− H loops and those calculated from the distributions determined from the loop measured at Ω = 0. In addition, the distributions of the particle length and orientation are observed with SEM. The estimated and observed results agree with each other.
