Abstract
In the last years electron cooling has become a well established method to reduce the phase space volume of ion beams in storage rings. We use a Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulation to study the interaction between the ion beam and the electron plasma in the cooler. We investigate the energy loss of heavy, highly charged ions in magnetized electron plasmas and focus on the influence of the magnetic field.
