Abstract

Thirteen male smokers, aged 43 to 70, inhaled polystyrene particles (15 +- 5 ..mu..m) tagged with /sup 51/Cr. Clearance was monitored externally by an array of scintillation probes. Clearance half-times were generally less than 2 hr and without relationship to degree of chronic respiratory disease or smoking history. Normal clearance half-times were closer to 20 to 30 min.
