Abstract

It is shown that under very general assumptions collisionless shocks can produce cosmic rays out ot an initially cold plasma with an efficiency of order unity. Heavy elements are preferentially accelerated relative to protons, as is observed. The nonthermal character of a wide variety of astrophysical systems can be accounted for by invoking collisionless shocks.
