Abstract
Participatory geographies involve equitable collaborations with people and places in ways that reflect their priorities in an effort to seek justice and create positive change. Such a goal is not easy or tidy, nor is it without issues of power and representation of voice, agency, and diversity. In this chapter we provide a genealogy of participatory research in and beyond the academy, before turning to its specific rise in geography. We cover the critiques and outline the trends, tensions and emerging questions in this niche area of geographic inquiry. For those new to this approach, we issue a cautionary note: participatory geography is not for the faint of heart or the rigid of mind. As activist-scholars currently in the academy, we know how important diplomacy can be but there are also times for shit-kicking in navigating the colonial, patriarchal, ableist, and heteronormative structures of these institutional spaces.
