Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to see if God-mediated control beliefs moderate the relationship between participation in combat and alcohol intake. God-mediated control refers to the belief that people can work together with God to deal with the problems that confront them and the plans they make. The data are from a nationwide probability sample of adults age 18 and older (N = 2,752). The findings suggest that the magnitude of the relationship between exposure to combat and alcohol consumption declines steadily as the level of God-mediated control increases. The theoretical implications of these findings are discussed.
