Abstract

As discussed earlier, offenders are committed to the California Youth Authority (CYA) because of serious and/or extensive involvement in criminality at an early age. Of those who were included in the present follow-up study, almost all (96%) apparently continued that involvement into adulthood (were arrested at least once).1 The nature and extent of their involvement in adult criminal behavior, however, differed greatly among offenders: some were arrested only once or twice for minor offenses while others were arrested for as many as 40 different (often serious) crimes. In this chapter, some of these differences will be explored.2
