Abstract

Summary The partially polarized multi-Gaussian Shell-model (MGSM) beam is proposed to describe the combination of the partially polarized GSM beams. The analytical propagation equation of partially polarized MGSM beams through a paraxial optical ABCD system is derived on the basis of the Wigner distribution function (WDF). The irradiance-moments characterization of partially polarized MGSM beams is performed, and the important beam characteristic parameters such as the beam propagation factor (M2 factor), beam width, far-field divergence angle and kurtosis parameter K of partially polarized MGSM beams are expressed in a closed form. The analytical results are illustrated with numerical examples. It is found that a flat-topped irradiance profile can be obtained at a certain plane by a suitable choice of the beam number, normalized separation, and also the coherence parameter of partially polarized GSM beams.
