Abstract
In this letter we propose the use of partial wave dispersionrelations (DRs) as the way to solve the longstanding problem ofcorrectly incorporating exchange in a valid DR for electron-atomscattering. In particular, a method is given for effectively calculatingthe contribution of the discontinuity and/or poles of the partial waveamplitude which occur in the negative E plane. The method issuccessfully tested in three cases: (i) the analytically solvableexponential potential, (ii) the Hartree potential and (iii) the S-waveexchange approximation for electron-hydrogen scattering. The latter isthe first successful DR which includes exchange.
