Abstract

Various complications of surgery of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) such as infection, hemorrhage, injury to fifth and seventh cranial nerves, cranial fossa perforation, and parotid gland injury among others, have been reported. Several reviews of complications of TMJ surgery have been published. 1-5 The purpose of this article is to report a complication; the partial resorption of the zygomatic arch following open TMJ surgery for release of ankylosis. A search of the English language literature did not reveal any report on such a complication due to open TMJ surgery. The resorption of the zygomatic arch has great clinical importance. There is facial asymmetry following resorption of the zygomatic arch. The zygomatic arch can fracture easily following even minor trauma. The arch is also more prone to fracture during elevation and retraction of soft tissues during any subsequent surgery on the TMJ. Therefore, clinicians managing temporomandibular disorders should be aware of such a complication. Report of a Case
