The authors test the optimal patch use concept for a plant/browser system.from a theoretical analysis of different kinds of patch (tree) gain functions, they derive predictions for the optimal patch (tree) residence time depending on tree size and average habitat quality.The models of optimal tree residence times are then tested against data from moose feeding on deciduous trees in an experimental arena in winter
