Abstract

TT u ‘f m orm criteria for what is clinically sound is diEcult to attain, since conflicting opinions originate at the interface between form, shape, extension, materials, and human physiology. All of these factors are influenced by training, experience, skill, and personal prejudices. Nowhere in dentistry are conflicting opinions better demonstrated than in partial and full coverage restorations. This survey was undertaken to (1) determine the prevailing consensus as to whether partial or full coverage restorations conserve more tooth structure and provide better esthetics and retention, (2) determine Jhe ideal location, if any, for establishing gingival margins of, restorations, and (3) obtain information regarding the criteria used by different centers of dental education for determining clinical acceptability of a preparation.
