Abstract

Electrical insulation in power cables often suffers from defects and degradation caused by partial discharges. This leads to failures which are typically time-consuming due to the difficulty to detect and isolate the fault location and subsequently to restore operation. This paper is an extension of previous work and presents an advanced capacitive model of voids in electric power cables. The model is based on the streamer concept. The two different stages of breakdown mechanisms are analyzed and incorporated into the proposed model.
