Abstract

This is the second of nine segments designed to commemorate the NAGWS Centennial, 1899–1999. It highlights the accomplishments of four past-presidents, who served from 1925 to 1932. The real thrust of this era was the guides that were produced, beginning with outdoor baseball (1929) and continuing with a myriad of other sports and athletic activities. The growth in the number of guides reflected the rising popularity of women's athletics. Although the number of competitions and championships continued to grow, the early women of the National Committee/Section on Women's Athletics (which was to become NAGWS) held firmly to their belief in “play for play's sake” and feared the exploitation of girls on the playing field.—Judy Oslin, Feature Editor.
