Abstract

Midwives are unique among health professionals in having a system of supervision prescribed by statute. The current arrangements for midwifery supervision are set out in the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Act 1997. New provisions for statutory regulation are due to come into force in April 2002 when the Nursing and Midwifery Council formally takes up its duties, but changes to the legislation for supervision of midwives have not yet been proposed.
