Abstract
A scheme to compensate those who have suffered personal injuries as the result of criminal action has been in existence since 1964. A new scheme for compensation following injuries or death as a result of a crime was established on 1 April 1996 under the Criminal Injuries Compensation Act 1995 based on a statutory scale of awards known as the ‘tariff’. Claims are processed by the Criminal Injury Compensation Authority (CICA) and claims officers and adjudicators on a panel determine whether a claim can be met.
