Abstract

In most patients with sensorineural hearing loss there is little possibility of recovery, and in some hearing may even be aggravated by certain conditions. Idiopathic bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (IBSH) has no clear cause, and progresses relatively rapidly at one stage. When the hearing loss progresses, treatment is necessary. We have treated 10 patients in whom a clearcut improvement in hearing was achieved by the use of a steroid drug. Our analysis of this small series lead to the following conclusions.1) The patients with IBSH responding to steroid administration included those in whom there was a definite posibility that an autoimmune disease was the etiology.2) Treatment with the steroid was instituted in most cases within two weeks of onset of the stage of rapid deterioration.3) Within 10 days of institution of steroid treatment, improvement occurred in more than half of the cases.4) When rapid deterioration in IBSH is suspected, an immunological examination is necessary prior to steroid treatment.
