Abstract

Traditional parotidectomy via preauricular and neck incision leaves a conspicuous scar across the lateral neck. Parotidectomy was performed through a facelift incision with or without the assistance of light retractor in 8 patients from September 1997 to April 2001. All tumors and superficial segments of parotid glands were removed without incident. Two patients suffered from temporary weakness of mainly zygomatic and buccal facial nerve branches. One patient complained of numbness over lower 1/2 of auricle for one year due to damage to great auricular nerve. All of the patients were satisfied with the position and quality of operative scar. Parotidectomy via facelift incision is a good alternative to parotidectomy in selected patients.
