Abstract

This paper is based on a presentation made by the author to the National Conference of the AASW in Brisbane, August, 1981. It reviews some aspects of the decision making process of the Parole Board of New South Wales. After considering the information used by the Board and its relationship to the selection of suitable candidates for release it proposes changes to the system. It is suggested that the decisions could be made more open to those whose lives they affect and that this would not undermine either the Board's authority or the community's reasons for having confidence in the system. There is some focus on the difficulties encountered by social welfare workers in this field. Although attention is directed at the parole system the issues are relevant to many workers who are employed in settings where people's rights or access to services or programmes are affected by the actions of administrative decision makers.
