Abstract

This paper responds to an article by Zacharakis-Jutz (Post-Freirean Education: A Question of Empowerment and Power, Adult Education Quarterly, 39, 4147). A portion of his article was devoted to a discussion of an article I had previously published (Unrestraining Liberty: Adult Education and the Empowerment of Persons, Adult Education Quarterly 36, 123-129). In this response I argue that the great strength of his discussion lies not in his criticism of my position. I try to show, in fact, that he has misunderstood my position and its claims in rather fundamental terms by evidently reading so selectively what I wrote as to fail to "hear" the text of my discourse itself.
