Abstract

We present a survey methodology to collect parking behavior data. The survey is a game that exposes respondents to hypothetical parking scenarios including parking information and the possibility of illegal parking. We use incentive mechanisms from the gamification literature. The survey overcomes choice set deficiencies of conventional revealed and stated preference surveys (i.e., large or unavailable choice sets). We record detailed travel and parking decisions and use the data to develop choice models. The Mixed logit model demonstrates significance of parking preference heterogeneity. Respondents are more likely to park legally when provided full information about parking spot status.
