Abstract

The gastric acid-secreting cell population was estimated in 11 healthy stomachs obtained from adult male subjects of Indian origin who had died of accidental causes. The average parietal cell mass was 1005.12 ( ± 445.34 sd ) million, the total surface area was 583.48 ( ± 142.98 sd ) cm2, and the mucosal height was 0.26 ( ± 0.04 sd ) mm. There was a good correlation between the parietal cell count per unit area and the parietal cell mass (r = 0.73) and also between the surface area of the mucosa and the parietal cell mass (r = 0.65). The data provide information on the parietal cell mass in healthy stomachs in Indians and suggest that the reported lower maximal acid output in Indians as compared with Western subjects may not be due to differences in the parietal cell population.
