Abstract

The early adolescent's growing desire for autonomy and independence is continuous and is expressed in essentially similar ways at home and at school. The essence of this development is in the inevitable task of all adolescents to alter their close ties with their parents and to establish similar close ties with others. In some cases this moving away from parents is gentle, while in many instances the process is quite stormy and trying.
