Abstract

Attendance at parenting classes is one of the criteria that must be met by parents before children who have been removed from them by the court for abuse or neglect can be returned to their custody. Evaluation of such classes is seldom accomplished. Rosenberg and Reppucci's study (cited in Garbarino, 1986) found that as much attention must be given to the evaluation of prevention programs as to their formulation if child abuse is to be eliminated. The absence of useful evaluative instruments contributes to the lack of evaluation. Little study has been done on the effects of parenting education of the abusing parent. The study discussed in this article was an attempt to develop a practical, reliable, and valid tool that measures parents' knowledge of parenting before and after attending a parenting class that included primarily abusive parents.
