Abstract

The purpose of the study was to determine the parent education needs of secondary students as a basis for providing useful information for the development of parent education programs. Data were collected by administering the Parent Information Inventory to 265 secondary students from 11 randomly selected school districts in Iowa. Factor analysis of the parent education needs assessment instrument yielded nine factors. Students expressed strongest needs in the areas of planning and decision making, parenting and child care, and adolescent social development. Significant differences were found in parent education needs perceived by males and females, junior and senior high students, and students from different sized school districts.
