In two articles in 1983, Menahem Haran suggested that the Hebrew root .. proves that papyrus was the writing material in pre-exilic times and that the shift from papyrus to parchment happened during the Second Temple Period. Using evidence from various Hebrew and Phoenician inscriptions, Haran’s evidence based on the Hebrew root will be shown incorrect. Haran’s conclusion may be correct regarding the use of papyrus; however, the evidence offered does not support the conclusion.
