Abstract

Ever since Sandstrom 1 discovered the parathyroid glands a large amount of literature has accumulated regarding the function of these glands in health and disease. Felix Mandl 2 was the first to remove successfully an adenoma of the parathyroid glands, which he accomplished in the now famous case of the Viennese streetcar conductor. Several cases of parathyroid adenoma occurring in adults have now been recorded and presently the diagnosis is made quite confidently. Parathyroid adenoma occurring in children and adolescents under the age of 15 years, is however, an extreme rarity. Wilkins 3 reviewing the literature was able to record only ten cases of primary hyperparathyroidism due to parathyroid adenoma in the age group below 15 years. Anspach and Clifton 4 were able to collect the same ten cases of parathyroid adenoma proved either at autopsy or operation in the age group referred to. Since 1939, we have been unable
