Abstract
To the Editor: In the February, 1962, issue of Diseases of Children, Page and Verhulst described a specific drug, pyridine-2-aldoxime methiodide (2-PAM) for the treatment of the organophosphate poisonings. This drug reactivates the phosphate bound acetylcholinesterase. Since publication of this paper Protopam (Protopam chloride, Campbell Pharmaceuticals, Inc.), the chloride salt, has become available for investigational use. This is a case report of the use of this drug in a critically intoxicated child. The patient, a 4-year-old Caucasian farm boy, was admitted to the emergency room of Saint Mary's Hospital in Walla Walla, Wash at 12:40 pm, Nov 27, 1962, in a moribund condition. The parents gave the following short history: About one hour before admission the boy went out to the barn to play, and 10 minutes later he returned covered with a yellow powder.
