Abstract

A short description of parasternal diaphragmatic hernia through the foramen of Morgagni is given, with special reference to its radiological diagnosis. A case of parasternal omental hernia is described and the importance of examining the patient in the erect position after an opaque enema is stressed. In this position the tenting of the transverse colon is accentuated. This, combined with the alternate widening and narrowing of the angulation of the transverse colon on forceful respiration (flapping wing sign), is considered diagnostic of an omental hernia through the foramen of Morgagni, thus eliminating the need for performing a diagnositc pneumoperitoneum.
