Abstract

Introduction: Ineffective erythropoiesis in patients with beta-thalassemia intermedia drives extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) in several parts of the body including the paraspinal region, causing spinal cord compression that may necessitate specialty management. Various therapeutic options include packed red cell transfusion therapy, laminectomy, radiotherapy, fetal hemoglobin inducing agents such as hydroxyurea and surgical resection of the mass. However, ideal management scheme remains uncertain. We present a 24-year old male with thalassemia intermedia who developed bilateral lower limb numbness & urinary hesitancy secondary to paraspinal EMH which was successfully treated with radiotherapy.
