Abstract

This past year, the number of hospital admissions for severe giardiasis rivaled those for shigellosis. The epidemiology of severe giardiasis implicated daycare centers as a source for endemic Giardia infections in the United States. Cryptosporidia was responsible for a large waterborne outbreak of diarrheal disease involving 400,000 residents of Milwaukee in 1993. The transmission rate of Cryptosporidia rivaled that for Shigella. The achievement of transient expression of foreign genes in transfected Entamoeba histolytica opened the way for genetic manipulation of these organisms as an approach to understanding the pathogenesis of amebiasis. Human enteric infection with the canine hookworm, Ancyclostoma caninum, was associated with a high incidence of eosinophilic enteritis in northeastern Australia.
