Abstract

Abstract This chapter focuses on parasitic infections of the skin and muscles of pets (dogs, cats, rabbits), such as flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis), fly strike (Lucilia sericata), louse infestations (Linognathus setosus, Trichodectes canis and Felicola subrostratus), mite infestations and mange (Cheyletiella, Demodex, Notoedres cati, Otodectes cynotis, Sarcoptes scabiei, Trombicula), tick infestations (Ixodes, Rhipicephalus, Amblyomma, Dermacentor) and leishmaniasis. Their clinical features, diagnosis, control, prevention and public health significance are discussed. The infectious diseases transmitted by fleas and ticks, and the life cycle of S. scabiei, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Dermacentor and Leishmania are described.
