Oxidative stress is an important factor in the development of atherosclerosis. Paraoxonase 1 (PON1), an enzyme associated with HDL, has been reported to have important antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cardioprotective actions, and the genetic deletion of PON1 is associated with increased atherosclerosis in animal models.
