Abstract

Abstract Widely tunable parametric oscillation has been obtained in the temperature-tuned, z - cut, 90 qphase-matched B i B 3 O 6 pumped by a Nd:YAG laser. Tuning range was 1.625~ 3.083 P m at the crystal temperature of 20q~190 q C. These data were used to reconstruct the high-accuracy Sellmeier and thermo-optic dispersion formulas in the 0.474~3.083 P m range that give an excellent reproduction of the phase-matching conditions thus far reported in the literature. Keywords: Optical parametric oscillator, Sellmeier equations, Thermo-optic dispersion formulas. Introduction Because of its 90 q phase-matchability along the z axis and moderate temperature variation of the birefringence (d(n y -n x )/dT), B i B 3 O 6 appears to be the ideal material for temperature–tuned, noncritically phase-matched parametric oscillator. To demonstrate its potential, we have pumped the 1.5cm long z-cut crystal with the Nd:YAG laser, and ha ve obtained the continuously tunable output in the 1.625-3.083 P m range by heating the crystal from 20 q to 190 q C.
