Abstract
In the present study, work pieces of different materials like low carbon steel, grey cast iron and bakelite with pilot hole of 12.0 have been used for drilling operations. The drill sizes Φ12.5, Φ13, Φ13.5 and Φ14 have been used with depth of cut varying from 0.25 to 1.0 mm. Taguchi-based L16 orthogonal array has been used for design of experiment (DOE). The input parameters are spindle speed, feed and depth of cut and the responses to be measured are surface roughness and cutting vibration along three directions. Parametric optimisation has been conducted and it is observed that spindle speed is the most influential factor for low carbon steel and bakelite whereas feed is the dominant factor for grey cast iron. Confirmatory tests have also been performed for validation of the applied optimisation technique.
