Abstract
The parametric excitation of density waves in semiconducting plasmas is considered. A new nonlinear mechanism for the direct conversion of photons into plasmons is presented, resulting from the nonparabolic momentum-energy relations for the single electron. Applications to InSb yield threshold intensities typically in the range ${10}^{4}$-${10}^{6}$ ${\mathrm{W}/\mathrm{c}\mathrm{m}}^{2}$.
