Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the effectiveness of simple parameter set points as a solution for event detection as part of online water quality monitoring. The results of two significant studies are presented, each of which evaluated both sophisticated event detection systems (EDSs) and set‐point analysis using actual utility data and simulated water quality incidents. In both studies, the performance of set‐point analysis was comparable to, and in some cases better than, that of the specialized EDSs. This suggests that set points are an effective solution for analysis of real‐time water quality data.
